Why go to work? Why work for your organization? Paying the bills? Supporting the family? Stock options? Success? Fame? Advancement? Riches? Power?
Perhaps service ultimately provides the most important power both for others as well as ourselves. Whether you’re working for a Fortune 500 company, a mom-and-pop shop, or a nonprofit, what does your organization do that gives a positive to others? Connect to that, and it radically changes the experience you have during your day and your career.
The old days where companies and people consumed themselves with what they could consume seem to fade away as new generations, raised in the post-9/11 era, emerge. These fresh faces seem to understand and feel that doing something of benefit with your work, and the way you make money, is not only a nice thing but also an essential thing.
It’s not easy to do when media and people around you applaud the famous and the profitable quicker than those who commit to serving and making a positive difference through their talents, sweat, products and organizations. Yet, I feel that connecting to service is ultimately what gives real job and career satisfaction and what transforms work into something of great value.
From technology to the arts, from science to education, from service jobs to white collar—finding what it is about what you do… that matters is truly a leap from the meaningless and depressing to the meaningful and joyful.
